Times tables

Three rows of four stars

Times means “groups of”. The picture has three rows, and each row has four stars. That is three groups of four. 3 × 4 = 12. You can also say four groups of three: 4 × 3 = 12. The order does not change the answer.

The × sign means times. One times any number is that number, so 1 × 7 = 7. Zero times any number is zero. A number times itself is a square number: 5 × 5 = 25.

Tables from 1 to 12

Choose a row, then read across. The 7 times table is the row that starts with 7. The square where 7 meets 8 says 56, because 7 × 8 = 56. Numbers on the diagonal, such as 6 × 6 = 36, are highlighted.
