Percentages

Percent means “out of 100”. The sign % is a short way to write that. 50% means 50 out of 100, which is the same as a half. 25% is a quarter. 10% is one tenth. 100% is the whole thing.

The pie in the picture is cut into 10 equal slices, and 7 of them are strawberry. Seven out of ten is the same as 70 out of 100, so the strawberry part is 70%.

Each small square is 1%. The violet squares are 25 of them, so this block is 25% filled.

Handy amounts

To find 50%, halve the number. To find 25%, halve it again. To find 10%, divide by 10. To find 75%, find a half and a quarter, then add them. 100% is the number you started with.
