Subtraction chart

Subtracting means taking some away and seeing what is left. Start with five balloons. Two float away. Three are still there. Five take away two is three. We write 5 − 2 = 3.
The minus sign − means take away. You cannot swap the numbers: 5 − 2 is 3, but 2 − 5 is not 3. Taking away zero leaves the number the same, so 8 − 0 = 8. Taking away the whole number leaves zero, so 8 − 8 = 0.
Chart from 0 to 10
The side number is what you start with. The top number is what you take away. A dash means you would be taking away more than you started with, so that fact is saved for later. Find 9 down and 4 across: 9 − 4 = 5.
